Why Letting Go Is So Hard to Do

2026.05.16 約11分で読めます

Sadness, anger, anxiety, disappointment.
Even when your mind knows "it's already over," the emotion alone can keep lingering in your body.

Remembering it over and over.
Getting hurt by the same thing again.
Even your body growing heavy.

Does this sound familiar?

Letting go isn't easy for most people.

But that's not because you're weak —
it's because that emotion was, at some point, necessary for your survival.

Emotions Have a Role

Emotions aren't simply something in your way.

Sadness exists to help you take in a loss.
Anger exists to protect your own boundaries.
Fear exists to sense danger.

In other words, emotions are important signals from your body and mind.

That's exactly why the brain sometimes keeps holding onto an emotion, as a form of self-protection.

When people hear the word "letting go," some feel like it means

  • Ignoring it
  • Forgetting it
  • Pushing it down

But that's not what letting go really is.

Letting something you've fully felt flow naturally out of your body —
that's what "letting go" truly means.

Old Emotions Linger in the Body

Many emotions you can't let go of are tied to past experiences.

  • A painful memory
  • An experience of rejection
  • An environment you had to keep enduring
  • A past where you never felt safe

Even when your mind thinks "it's already over," your body still remembers.

That's why a similar event can suddenly bring back that pain.

Sometimes the reaction that surfaces is bigger than what's actually happening right now.

If you keep pushing an emotion down for a long time, it can eventually show up as physical discomfort.

Sometimes "Pain" Becomes Who You Are

People sometimes start to believe that an emotion they've carried for a long time is "who they are."

"I'm someone who's hurting."
"I'm someone who's sad."
"I'm someone who's always suffering."

Once that happens, letting go of the emotion becomes frightening.

Because you don't know who you are once that emotion is gone.

But in truth, you are not the emotion itself.

You've simply been carrying it, living with it, for a long time.

Letting Go Means Loosening Your Grip on "Control"

For some people, holding onto an emotion was once a matter of survival.

For example,

protecting yourself through anger.
Staying guarded so you wouldn't get hurt.

In cases like this, letting go of the emotion also means loosening your "defense."

That's exactly why it's frightening.

But once you truly move through an emotion, you become able to breathe deeply again.

A sense of space returning deep within your body.
Finally being able to release the tension.

Letting go isn't something that finishes in an instant.

Over time, through

  • Acknowledging
  • Feeling
  • Moving through

your body gradually begins to loosen, further along in that process.

What Supports Letting Go

Breath

Deep breathing moves the tension and emotion that have lodged in your body.

Through breath, you can

  • Restore the connection between your body and your emotions
  • Release tension
  • Make it easier for what's pooled up inside to flow

.

Journaling

Writing your emotions out is also very important.

Holding onto something only in your head doesn't let the emotion circulate.

Writing it on paper can

  • Organize your thoughts
  • Let you see your emotions objectively
  • Make it easier to understand yourself

.

FUUKA's [Tuning] SR-10 | Release

At FUUKA too, "letting go" is one of the most important themes we work with.

Letting go doesn't mean "forcibly cutting something off."

It's returning something you no longer need to a state where it can flow away naturally.

Gradually loosening your grip on something you've been holding onto tightly, for so long.

Scent quietly supports you through that process.

[HSP] No.9 | Closure

Closure, from the HSP series, is also an indispensable item for exactly this theme.

The word "closure" also carries the sense of "conclusion," "resolution" — a feeling of arriving at a settled sense of resolution.

When you want to move on to your next step, when your heart has already started moving in that direction,

it sits with you, and becomes a source of strength.

Our hearts are deeply affected by our connections to other people.

Dependence. Attachment. Fear.
Handing your own power over to someone else.

Bonds that can't be cut form within relationships like these.

A past relationship.
Family ties.
Relationships at work.

It should already be over, but somehow you're still exhausted.
Just remembering it hurts.

That may be a sign that a psychological bond is still lingering.

Sorting through a relationship can support you in

  • Lightening the weight on your heart
  • Reclaiming your own center
  • Returning to "here, now"

.

Not being dragged along by others, but standing on your own strength.

This is support for reclaiming that sense of yourself.

In Closing

"Letting go" isn't a light word.

It can be painful, frightening, and take real time.

But feeling your emotions is not weakness.

If anything, the people who can truly feel them are the ones who, in the end, move forward.

There's no need to rush.

Because people can only let go in proportion to how safe they feel.
