“I love talking to people I've just met. Going somewhere new excites me. And yet, before I know it, I'm far more wiped out than everyone else.”
“I'm sure I'm an extrovert. I'm sociable, and I love stimulation. But people also call me sensitive — what is this mismatched feeling?”
Plenty of people wrestle with this contradiction without knowing about a type called HSS-type HSE. Let's untangle what HSS-type HSE actually is, and how it differs from the similar-sounding HSS-type HSP.
What Is HSS-Type HSE
HSS-type HSE is a type where three traits overlap.
- HSP (Highly Sensitive Person): A trait of high sensory processing sensitivity, processing things deeply
- HSE (Highly Sensitive Extrovert): An HSP who is also extroverted, drawing energy from connecting with others. Psychologist Dr. Elaine N. Aron estimates that roughly 30% of HSPs fall into this extroverted type
- HSS (High Sensation Seeking): A trait of actively seeking stimulation, novelty, and change
Most HSPs are introverted, recovering mainly through alone time. HSS-type HSE is what happens when two traits that don't seem very “HSP-like” at first glance — extroversion (HSE) and sensation-seeking (HSS) — layer on top of that. Meeting people becomes a form of stimulation you genuinely enjoy, but because the trait of deep processing doesn't go away, you still tire more quickly than most.
The Difference From the Often-Confused “HSS-Type HSP”
A search will turn up far more information on “HSS-type HSP,” but this is a different combination from HSS-type HSE.
- HSS-type HSP (introverted): Carries the desire to seek stimulation, but recovers energy through alone time. The type that's “curious, yet tires quickly around people”
- HSS-type HSE (extroverted): Carries the desire to seek stimulation, and also recovers energy through connecting with others. “Being with people is genuinely enjoyable, and even energizing,” but due to the sensory-processing trait, exhaustion hits suddenly once the volume gets too high
Even among HSPs who “love stimulation but tire easily,” the state leading up to that exhaustion is completely different. HSS-type HSP feels drained from an early point, while HSS-type HSE genuinely enjoys itself for a while, then crashes suddenly like a dead battery once a certain line is crossed.
Why the Contradiction of “Sociable, Yet Tired” Happens
An HSS-type HSE's nervous system runs two opposing mechanisms at once.
One is the accelerator, pushing outward in search of stimulation and new relationships. The other is the brake, processing incoming information more deeply than most. Pressing the accelerator and stepping into a crowd of people comes easily, but the brake-side processing proceeds quietly and steadily in the background regardless.
During a party or event, the feeling of “having fun” masks the brake's effect, which is exactly why both the person themselves and the people around them rarely notice the exhaustion building. The moment you leave the venue, or right after you get home, the fatigue hits all at once, like a dam breaking.
Living With HSS-Type HSE
Know That “Having Fun” and “Being Drained” Can Coexist
Getting tired even though you were enjoying yourself isn't a contradiction, and it isn't a lie. Simply knowing that, for an HSS-type HSE, enjoyment and exhaustion naturally happen together spares you the confusion when the fatigue arrives later.
Always Secure “Do-Nothing Time” Before and After Plans
Don't stack another plan right after a stimulating one. Especially after a plan you genuinely enjoyed, it's exactly then that you need to deliberately leave room to recover.
Identify a “Spot to Be Alone” at the Venue in Advance
Even during a party or event, know ahead of time where you can block out input for just a few minutes — a restroom, somewhere outside for fresh air. Gradually releasing the brake-side processing this way can delay the moment your battery dies.

Summary
- HSS-type HSE is a sociable, stimulation-loving type of HSP, combining HSP, HSE (extroverted), and HSS (sensation-seeking)
- Unlike the introverted “HSS-type HSP,” it draws energy from being with people, but the sensory-processing trait still leads to sudden exhaustion eventually
- Knowing that “fun” and “exhaustion” can coexist, and securing recovery time before and after plans, are key to living with this type
