About Aroma Use With Children

子供のアロマについて

Introduction

Essential oils are extremely concentrated natural compounds extracted from the flowers, leaves, peels, and resins of plants.
Being naturally derived and being safe are not the same thing.

Especially when using them with children,
you cannot treat them with the same sense of scale or the same amounts as with adults.

As a business handling products that involve children, FUUKA values
being able to decide "not to use it" even more than knowing "whether it can be used."

This page is
an official guide to help you correctly understand the safety, mindset, and precautions around using essential oils with children.
It is not intended for medical use or treatment.

About the Information in This Guide (Sources and Approach)

The content of this page is based on
expert knowledge on the safe use of essential oils with children, drawn from sources including
The Complete Book of Essential Oils for Mama & Baby by Christina Anthis.

We also reference European safety regulations for essential oils (GHS: Globally Harmonised System), to accurately explain "why caution is needed" and "why certain limits exist."

At FUUKA,
we treat essential oils not as something meant to "produce an effect," but as
a natural force for gently sitting with the state of mind and body.

Essential Oils Are Not Something to Treat Lightly

Essential oils are highly concentrated substances,
containing many naturally derived chemical compounds.

Some of these compounds are
classified as "substances requiring caution" under the EU's GHS (Globally Harmonised System for the classification and labeling of chemicals).

This doesn't mean "they're dangerous, so don't use them."
It means correct knowledge and the right amount are needed.

Why Essential Oils Affect Children So Strongly

The fact that essential oils feel stronger to children isn't just a subjective impression.
There are clear physical and developmental reasons behind it.

1. A Smaller Body Means a Relatively Larger Effect

Because children have a smaller body weight and body surface area,
the same amount affects their body more than it would an adult.

This is the same principle that applies to medication and food additives.

2. Detoxification and Metabolic Function Are Still Developing

The compounds in essential oils are mainly metabolized and detoxified in the liver.

In infants and young children,

  • Liver function
  • Detoxification enzyme activity

are both still developing.

Because of this, an amount an adult could process without issue
can place a burden on a child's body.

3. The Sense of Smell and Nervous System Are Extremely Sensitive

Smell is the sense most directly connected to the brain, among all five senses.
Scent information reaches the limbic system (emotion, the autonomic nervous system, memory) directly.

Because a child's nervous system is still not fully mature, they tend to

  • Experience scent more intensely
  • Be more easily affected in mood or excitability

than an adult would.

4. Thinner Skin Means Easier Absorption

A child's skin is thinner than an adult's, and its barrier function is still immature.
This makes them more susceptible to the effects of compounds absorbed through the skin.

5. Children Can't Describe Discomfort in Words

Children can't accurately put into words

  • A sense that something feels off
  • Irritation
  • A feeling of unwellness

the way an adult can.

They may signal this in other ways instead —
crying, restlessness, trouble sleeping.

That's exactly why
adults need to be cautious in advance, ahead of any sign of trouble.

Less Is More

Less is more
For a child, just a small amount is enough.

Essential oils aren't something where using more is better.
Increasing the amount never leads to more reassurance.

What matters for a child isn't
"making it work," but
"feeling safe and at ease."

Subtract, rather than add.
That is the safest, most honest choice.

Basic Principles for Use

Never Do This

  • Drinking essential oils
  • Applying undiluted oil directly to skin
  • Using an adult essential oil on a child based on your own judgment alone

Cases Requiring Extra Caution (Contraindications)

Please be especially cautious if any of the following apply:

  • Epilepsy
  • Asthma
  • Skin conditions such as eczema or other skin trouble

About Allergic Reactions

An allergic reaction can occur in response to compounds contained in an essential oil.

If you notice any of the following symptoms,
stop use immediately.

  • Itching
  • Redness
  • Discomfort or a sense that something is wrong

Please consult a specialist or doctor as needed.

Basic Guidelines by Age

0–6 Months

For a baby at this stage,
essential oils themselves should not be used at all.

Their body is not yet at a stage where it can process these compounds.

6 Months–3 Years

Bodily function gradually develops during this stage, but
use still needs to be extremely cautious.

Avoid strong scents or prolonged use.

3–4 Years

Use only products specifically designed for children.
Keep the scent to "just barely noticeable."

4–8 Years

Children's lines can be used, but
always follow the recommended amount and frequency.

About Age 8 and Up

From age 8 on, the range of what can be used widens, but
a highly sensitive child may still prefer a gentler line.

Rather than age alone,
always prioritize that particular child's own response.

About Usage Amounts (General Reference Information)

FUUKA does not sell children's massage oils or roll-ons. The usage guidelines below are not FUUKA's own product guidance.
This information is based on
information publicly shared for general audiences by De Groene Linde, the Dutch aroma brand FUUKA carries,
regarding the safe use of essential oils with children.

Many people aren't sure
"how much is too much" or "where the line for safety is"
when using essential oils with a child, so
we're sharing information that can serve as a general safety reference.

Please Keep in Mind

  • The table below shows a safety upper limit for reference.

  • It is not a recommendation to use this amount.

  • We do not suggest increasing the amount to boost the effect.

  • Always prioritize the child's age, health, and sensitivity above all.

Less is more
For a child, just a small amount is enough.

Essential Oil Usage Guidelines by Age (General Reference Information)

*FUUKA does not sell massage oil or roll-on products.
The following introduces, in Japanese, general safety standards published by a Dutch aroma brand.
It is not a recommendation to use these amounts, but is offered as reference information to help you decide.

When Used on a Scented Stone or Stuffed Animal

Age Amount
0–6 months 0 drops

About Dilution

Since essential oils don't dissolve in water, always dilute them in a plant-based carrier oil before use.
Never add undiluted oil directly to bath water, or apply it directly to skin.

Example carrier oils:
Jojoba oil / sweet almond oil / sesame oil (unscented, no additives)

The dilution ratios are calculated based on

  • the general industry conversion that
1 drop of essential oil ≈ approx. 0.05ml,
together with expert references and a Dutch age-based usage chart.

Roll-On Usage Frequency (Reference)

Age Frequency
0–6 months Not used
6–36 months Up to 2 times per day*
3–4 years Up to 2 times per day
